Default Cubase overview??

Hi,

Not strictly a technical problem ..but ...

Does anyone know of a good introduction guide to Cubase?

Something that explains how it all hangs together, what the different bits actually do, what comes "in the box" and what you have to buy as extras?

I see all sorts of terminology, (VST, HAlion, plug ins, etc) and I don't know how it all fits together.

I don't mind buying it (or at least ordering from my local library) - but if there is an online version - that would be great

Thanks in anticipation

Cheers

Mark

Have you been to the Steinberg site? They have some info and forums. Not entirely positive if the forum is only accessible after you've purchased Cubase or not. Worth a shot to see though.

You might want to do a search on You Tube. I know there are some nice tutorials there.

In a nutshell, Halion is an included soft synthesizer that can play (convert, actually) MIDI information into audio. There are hundreds of such programs, free or for sale. Halion is Steinberg's.

VST is a software format for little programs called plugins. Cubase, and now lots of other DAWs, can use VST plugins in the prgram. They might be synthesizers like Halion, or they might be effects like reverbs or compessors. there are literally thousands of plugins available, many of them free for downloading on the Internet.

If you have Cubase and a decent audio interface, you don't need to buy any "extras" at least not for a long time. you can record audio and MIDI, play it back. cut and paste, edit it a thousand ways, add effects, and mix all the tracks into a final stereo mix to burn to CD.

Do you now own Cubase? It comes bundled with many audio interfaces. It includes some tutorial projects with which to practice.

Stienberg provides no instructions on how to select presets when attempting to use 'Haloin One" nor have I found procedures on the internet describing it's use, The presets selecting procedure is certainly not "Macintosh Like intuitive" and with all my 51 years of computer experience, I consider selecting a "Halion One preset" in "Cubase essential 4" to be an inscrutable enigma.

Does anyone know of a document explaining how to make the selections?

Hi Folks,

I do appreciate the help suggestions that you have provided but I have now found the source of my frustrations. I have a computer virus that has attacked and ruined all my preset files in "Cubase Essential 4". Other files may also be affected which
I'm not aware of.

The affected files Icons have been altered to show a folded eared sheet with a large letter "A" on it. When I open a file, This little elf looking character is waiting to play a game of "Big Bang 4 In A Row". When I engage the little fellow, the the monitor opens up full size. There is no way that I can loose the game but in the end he says... "You Loose". The programer of this Virus did a bang-up job with the Graphics but he left me with a hell os a mess.

I think the virus was associated with a CE-4 Update that I downloaded from the Stienberg site. When I downloaded the update went through the normal automatic installation procedures and reported that that it was succcessfully installed.

I later looked in my applications folder to fine that I had what appeared to be a Full Legged Version of "CUBASE STUDIO 4". I Was foolish enough to open it and it looked authentic.

Cubase users,..... Be aware of "Big Bang 4 In A Row"
