cubase le4/lexicon omega/effects question

frustrated newbie here! can someone tell me if i can put on effects before recording a track ie:record a vocal with reverb already on...or record a guitar with distortion already on....and if i can HOW!! my son wants to record himself going in as distorted so he doesnt lose the feel of the music by playing clean and then adding distortion! but i'll be damned if i can figure it out!! much thanks in advance.

You can set the distortion plugin up, assuming youre using plugins, and it will still playback clean and undistorted until you turn the monitor button on. It looks like a little speaker and turns yellow when its on. It is located on the corresponding track's channel strip. You can always take take the plugin off of the track, it doesnt record the guitar wet.
