Default Cubase LE/Tascam-144

What's up everyone? I'm fairly new to recording and I've been reading rediculous amounts of tutorials. I've owned a Tascam-144 for quite a while now but I never really got serious into recording with it. I just recently bought a Sure SM-57 for micing my amplifier and it sounds great and all but I have no idea how to configure the Tascam with its included software (Cubase LE). I've been using Audacity because its the only program I can get to work, lol. I would really appreciate some help!

First of all, I will assume that the Tascam is just an interface and not an actually recorder itself. If so, find the drivers and make sure Windows knows about the interface and has the correct ASIO drivers installed for the device. Now install LE and go to VST device setup and find the multritrack setup tab. Make sure you see your device there and select it. Make sure your inputs and outputs correspnd to what you see on your Tascam. If you have the Getting Started manual on the cd, it is your new best friend.

Yes it is an interface. Specifically my problem in Cubase is that the sound is being picked up, like it moves the "bars" up and down. When I hit record, it says the sound is being recorded but when I go to play, no sound comes out. Also, could someone explain to me what ASIO drivers and VST's are?

Can you hear while you are recording? If you can you probably have the monitor button (with the speaker on it) for the track turned on. This is desirable. For playback, you have to turn that same button off. It is a pain in the ass.

ASIO drivers are the drivers that tell the PC all about what your interface, in this case the TASCAM, needs to produce sound. They are just like any other drivers on your pc. In the area I described in my last post, make sure that the drop down shows that you have TASCAM ASIO drivers or something similar, selected.

VST stands for Virtual Studio Technology, it is a standard for audio programs (hosts and plug ins) to talk to each other. It was designed for the Windows platform, Mac has its own. ProTools uses their own proprietary RTAS spec, which is one more reason that they are considered a pain in the ass.

No, the green bar things (not to get technical or anything ) are moving up and down and it gets picked up when I record its just when I go to play back, no sound comes out. I've tried it with the "monitor" on and off and it dosnt work. Also, it only picks up recording in stero when I only have one input.

Can you hear sound from anything in Cubase when recording or monitoring? Check your setup and make sure you are driving the output to the right interface/speakers?

hey i am really new to recording and i am having some of the same issues as other people on here. I just purchased the tascam 144 interface and i am using cubase le. i can record but no playback as well as no monitors live or during recording. i have set up the inputs, i have tried selecting and unselecting the monitor button. i have made sure that nothing is muted. i am just unsure where to go next. i purchased my interface open box so there was not any of the drivers cds but i downloaded the newest driver 1.11 from tascams website. any help would be awesome!

sounds like you don't have the tascam soundcard as your default in windows
go to start control panel speech and audio devices, make sure your tascam is selected as your primary. hope this helps man!

Hey i really appreciate the advice. If i set my computer to use the tascam sound card i would have to have powered monitors hooked up to my interface right?? i ordered some m-audio monitors and they are not in yet but i think changing the sound card should work...i will keep you posted!

that is your problem. you can't hear the sound because the us doesn't have monitors on it. when you get your monitors and set your primary this should fix your sound! however for the time being if you get some headphones and adapt them for quarter inch(if they are not already) you should be able to hear.
