Default cubase LE recording in midi

Hi, I'm definitely confused.

I just bought some software with cubase LE in the package and I'm trying to learn to use it.

I can record midi tracks, but the timing seems out [delays], so I've given up on that temporarily. I can also record audio tracks and can save them as .wav files, but when I try to play back the wav files I get nothing.

Anyone out there who can suggest some hints?

Confused

Are driving an external synth with your midi track or an internal soft synth. If it's an internal soft synth then your delay may actually be buffer latency from your audio interface.

When you record audio do you see the wave form display in the project window? When you export are you exporting as a standard wav or a wav64 format? If you re-import the wav file do you still see it's wave form in Cubase? Can you play it in Cubase?

i read in the cubase tutorial to lower the recording buffers as low as possible....

additionally, i have my device (tascam US144) set on it's control panel to lowest latency

Hi. Thanks for replying. I'm still very much in the steep learning curve with all this and I'm not sure I understand what's going on.

I have a Roland EM-55 keyboard which I plugged into a TASCAM US-122L. When I use the midi ports to record I get a delay between hitting a key on the keyboard and hearing the note in my headphones.

So, I decided to just record the keyboard as an audio track. When I record I see a waveform and I saved the file [which is a .cpr, I think].

I can play back the file at a later time, but when I tried to export it and save it as a .wav file it won't play when I open that file inside media player. Also, when I downloaded the .wav file to a CD it wouldn't play there either.

Thank you for your help. I'm struggling to get to first base with this.

Confused.

This sounds to me like the latency of your US-122. Consider; the analog audio of your keyboard is converted to digital (by the US-122) then is sent to Cubase where it is fed back to the monitor output which routes it back to the US-122 where the digital signal is converted back to analog which is what you then hear. Each conversion takes time which adds delay to the final signal getting to your headphones. To avoid this delay use the direct monitoring feature of the US-122 to listen to your keyboard's audio as it is *before* the analog to digital conversion.

Are you setting the in/out markers before you export? Are you choosing the correct output in the export dialog (i.e. the same output that your audio tracks are assigned to)? What is the file size of your exported wav file? If it is zero kb then your in/out markers probably aren't set. What does Windows Media Player do when you open the file? Is there an error message? Does it tell you the play time of the file (e.g. minutes & seconds).

Hi again,

I seem to be going forwards, then backwards with this. I tried recording something new today and now I can't get anything to work.

When I open a new project and add a track [audio, for example] I can't see a signal in the mixer [implying that no signal is getting in?] and nothing gets recorded.

I thought maybe if I opened an old file that I'd already recorded and tried adding another track to that, that maybe at least I could do that - still no signal.

I'm wondering about input/output. Should they be different or the same?
i.e. input = SigmaTel Audio 1 and output = SigmaTel Audio 2? [or should I use SigmaTel Audio output 1?] I can't figure this out from the manual.

I also thought that if I opened a file I'd already made and looked through the settings that I used to make that file that I could use those same settings [set up a new project using those settings] - but that didn't work either.

I'm really confused! Can anybody help. Sorry to be such a slow learner. I had it working and now I can't get it to do anything.

Thanks.

Hello. I would like to know if anybody understands Cubase LE w/ an SP90 ES USB port?

The problem is we don't understand USB. We need the computer to be the Master and the synth to be the Slave, but still have all the same tones from the synth. Does anyone know if we are supposed to go to synth "host" or from synth "device" to PC?

If someone could explain this it could clear up alot. We have no midi interface box besides the synth, so if it requires a midi interface then we are up shit creek.
