Hi,
> > Imported a midi file from my Korg PA 50 to Cubase LE 4 using my Firepod > and MacBookPro tiger 10.4.11. Dissolved the part in Cubase LE 4 but when > I play it back from Cubase LE 4 I get no sound. I can however play the sound back through the PA 50 by clicking play from the Cubase LE 4 controls and hearing the sound from the PA 50 speakers. Clicked on Transport and chose Transport Synchronization Setup to click off the check boxes that I had previously checked, in order to import the midi file (as recommended) so that I could listen to the song through the Firepod but still can't hear anything. I can see the meters working however and can hear the click track. Help??? Meadowlark. |

First, we need to make sure a wav file plays back properly. Can you confirm that you normally get sound out of Cubase?
If we are sure that the audio interface is setup properly try this and then get back to me with any specific questions: MIDI Troubleshooting 101

Thank you Brandon,
Yes All connections are properly hooked up and programs are responding. Have checked out your midi 101 study, and have had no trouble recording directly into Cubase LE 4 and playing it back, but importation especially from a PA 50 is another story. I think I am getting to the bottom of the problem, and hope to be able to shed some light on the situation tomorrow, and explain what I have done. I will keep you posted. Thanks again for your input and help. Meadowlark |

Okay, I thought the PA 50 was something else. The PA 50 is external synth (I gave up on those years ago). So when you have a MIDI track in Cubase that track has to go somewhere. I usually output it to one of my VST instruments in the F11 menu.
I could also send the MIDI track back out of Cubase, out of my audio interface, and into an external synth. (This is what you are doing). Now, when you play back the the MIDI track, it's triggering your PA 50 and this is why you are hearing sound through your keyboard speakers. To get that sound back into Cubase, you would have to create an audio track, run the synth into your audio interface, and select the correct inputs. You must have the monitoring button on! The other route is to run your synth into a mixer of some kind that combines the signal coming out of your audio interface with the signal from your keyboard. Most recording guys are using software based synths and samples these days. Even if I was a live dude, I would still use software based synths and samples. What you are trying to do is blending old school and new school together in a way that is a bit cumbersome. Brandon

Hi Brandon,
You are so right. All my new stuff is going to be done with my new Axiom 61 midi data controller, with vst instruments but for the older stuff it is all on floppy disk and for all practical purposes I have to use the PA 50, or re-write everything. (That thought gives me the shudders). Have managed to import the three midi songs that I need for tomorrow, but have not managed the audio tracks yet. Created a new audio track for one of the instruments in a song, tried dragging the selected midi track into it, as recommended, but the midi track just skips over the newly created audio tack and comes to rest below it. Should I be creating a new audio track for every instrument and then re-recording each track, one at a time, or just creating a new audio project? What's next? Thank you. One note at a time, Meadowlark. |

That would achieve your goals.
