Post As this is a Cubase forum can someone review Cubase 5 for everyone...

Hey all,

I am nearing closer to wanting to get Cubase 5 and as this specific realm of Recording Review is all about Cubase, can everybody that has Cubase 5, made an upgrade to it, or just simply used it, explain and describe why or why not people using an earlier version of Cubase should get it...

I've read a lot about it and watched quite a few videos on Cubase 5 but its always better listening to people that have or do use it.

Thanks for your time

Really, there's nothing revolutionary about Cubase 5 over 4. There's Variaudio, which works well, and some new plugins like Loopmash and Reverence, and of course many other new features most of which I don't use.

The practical side to upgrading is staying in the upgrade-loop. If C6 happens to come along and it does have features or updates you want (including the seemingly slow-to address bug fixes), you'll have to fork out twice as much at that time. You pay just as much by not upgrading to C5 and upgrading to the eventual C6, but didn't get the benefit of the features found in C5.

Sure, you could just migrate to a new platform. But why throw away all that knowledge in Cubase?

I would suggest you update since the new features and such are helpful, but it's not going to make the production/writing/recording experience overwhelmingly better.

The last updates that really helped in this manner were in C4 with better routing and reassignable inserts. Now, those were features to upgrade for!

I was forced to use Sonar for the first time recently . I was amazed how much it had in common with Cubase. I am not sure there will be that much of a learning curve if you have to jump platforms. Pro Tools is a different kettle of fish altogether.

One feature that has been upgraded that I seriously want haha, is being able to drag and drop inserts in any order that I want. In Cubase SX 3 the shittest thing about it is not being able to change the order of the inserts without having to save the pre-sets in whatever I'm using and then deleting them and rearranging. Its a pain in the ass when you rack up the channels and there is a shit load of stuff to mix around.

Thanks and any more answers etc are most welcome

From SX3 to C5? Oh, you didn't mention you were using SX3! Then yes, it's definitely worth the upgrade.

And you're in luck...the upgrade path from SX3 costs the same as C4: $199 US. So, there goes my point about paying more...but still, you didn't get the benefit of those features in the meantime.

If dragging inserts is something you need, then you should upgrade. You'll like the more flexible routing as well. It's not as flexible as Reaper or Protools , but certainly better than SX3. At least, you can freely route groups whether you want to route to a newer group or older group. I think I remember that you could only route a group to a newer group up until the middle of C4.

And, reassignable inserts (as well as ALT+CLICK drag to copy one to a different channel) was certainly a useful upgrade in C4.

I think you'll like the new list of features in C5.

haha, holy mother fucking fuck... I can't believe I didn't mention I am using Cubase SX3 in my original post... I usually a professional Jono_not_Bono when I am explaining things haha...I guess I should pour another glass of Cider into my champagne flute

Many thanks for your help.... all I am wondering is that there isn't a sticky thread about Cubase 5 under this Cubase Forum yet, I mean, if this is Recording Review's home for Cubase, then all things Cubase should be covered... Especially for people that aren't upgrading and have never used Cubase before and may want to try it out for the first time

A question for me (haha how selfish)...

How does Cubase 5's Reverence stack up to...say, for example, Altiverb or Waves Convolution reverb (IR1)? I'm interested in finding out about this because both WAVES and ALTIVERB are fucking expensive and it would be great to know that an included plug in could be amazing!

Thanks for your time

Jono_not_Bono

ps...Fancy a glass of cider?

Cider? Not if I have to drink from a 'champagne flute'. Sounds a bit.....fluffy to me. I'll have it in a glass.

I don't know how Reverence stacks up against commercial convolution reverbs. I don't have them. It sounds good, better than the other Cubase reverbs. It does sound better than the original SIR reverb. No latency.

I noticed you asked pretty much this same question in a prior post and it went unanswered. Glad to be of some help.

Don't go to Cubase.net unless you have a Masters degree in Cubase, or are one of the developers...it's a mean place with lots of cranky members. RTFM is the most common answer, or it's just plain post-to-post combat.

Cubase.net is the meanest forum I've found! This place seems much more reasonable.

I'll drink cider out of a fucking tea pot. Its just sometimes a Champagne Flute sounds fluffy, then you may think again once you've drunk 8 litres of the stuff, through a champagne flute hah

Anyway, cheers.
