Default Cubase AI Yamaha DtXpress IV

Hey guys-

the setup is midi to usb controller into my front usb port. All the patching to CUBASE AI is fine as I get noise. Freekin piano noise for some reason. I can change the kits and stuff..but was hoping to get direct connect from the xpress IV....like whatever the kit plays I can record?
Thanks in advance!

ps. I'm definately a noob. Sorry!

Can you provide more details? Am I correct in understanding that you have the DT patched in via midi and it is triggering piano voices? If so, it sounds like a midi mapping issue. You will not hear your DTX sounds unless you use audio out of the module into the audio in of your audio interface. If midi is all you have, you can have the DTX pads act as just as a midi recorder, but once it is midi in Cubase, you have to make that midi data be the input to a VST instrument, such as EZ Drummer or a synth software with drum voices. Am I on the right track?

Check out this: MIDI Troubleshooting 101

It sounds like you have the output of the MIDI track routed to the Windows Wavetable synth. You don't want this. Only route it to the specific VSTi you want to trigger with your edrum kit. In my case, I route the output of the MIDI track toToontrack Superior Drummer 2.0 or Steven Slate drum samples in Kontakt 2.

Awesome. Both responses. Yeah..seems like I was confused about what midi is and does, but this forum has helped tremendously! I will try and do the audio out thing. As I understand it now midi is just raw data. We assign it to sounds.

So I will attempt to direct in through my reciever.

..I have the soundblaster x-fi thing:
PCI Express Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio - Xtreme Fidelity for your music and movies
optical to my reciever. Prolly shouldn't be too dificult.. I think I can make the optical an input from an output by clicking it.

They make mixers with an optical out?

Correct. Instead of entering this data with a mouse of keyboard, you choose to use an edrum kit in this case.

The only mixers I've seen with optical out are digital mixers. I'm sure your receiver has an extra RCA input or 10. Pretty much all mixers have that.
