I believe you just need to toggle off the 'Snap' button.
Hello,
I'm new here so hopefully this question is in the correct place...
Basically i'm tracking some guitar parts and I cant seem to figure out how to start recording at a beat instead of a bar. when I go to record the cursor will jump to the nearest bar instead of starting at the beat that I want to start at, as some of my riffs change before it completes a whole bar (or measure as some people refer to it). I have a click track all set up and everything is fine other than this issue...i have been starting the recording a bar forward from where I want to record then using "edit > Range > Delete Time" to remove the unused area. It's just a hassle especially if i need to go back and change something in the future this could be problematic. sorry if this question is dumb i'm kinda new to cubase and recording software.
Thanks!
I believe you just need to toggle off the 'Snap' button.

Yep, sounds like that's what is happening.
Cubase 5, Tascam US-122 (mkII), Fenix Tele, Suzuki Nagoya, Alesis Q49, Sennheiser E815, Roland MA-12s, Sennheiser HD 215s ... and a ton of plug ins

You can change a the top the quantize of the grid. So right now it's at a bar. Change it to a beat or to whatever you want

You can also record in lanes in Cubase by clicking the lanes button on the track (looks like a cuople of little boxes stacked on each other and slightly offset).
Don't recall how to do this off the top of my head without Cubase in front of me, but you can also set the record button to punch-in wherever you want it to start - i.e. so you can hit "play" a few bars back, and when record starts, you are already in the middle of playing the part - this is beneficial for if you screw up some part in the middle of a verse or something and want to redo that part, but you are happy with the parts before and after. The lanes just make it really easy to trim everything and comp it together.

Lanes are only in cubase 6.5...
And to punch in you can either specify a bar or just press * on your keyboard num pad to start recording the moment you press on the keyboard

yes there was lanes in 5 and in 6.0. I use them constantly.
Thanks for the info guys but I still can't figure out the problem. my grid type is set to beat, my snap type is set to grid and snap is on. when i click on the tracks it snaps to the nearest beat but no matter what i've done it will always just jump to the nearest bar to start recording. perhaps I can utilize the lanes for recording but I would still like to know how to start recording directly on a beat, as there must be someway to do it.
That has to be a setting somewhere. It always starts recording wherever the cursor is for me. Then again, I'm pretty sure I always hit play first and then press *. I'm not sure I have just hit record.it will always just jump to the nearest bar to start recording.
Nope. I was using them in Cubase SX3, Cubase 5, and early version of Cubase 6.Lanes are only in cubase 6.5...
This must be prog metal with those unnatural tempo changes. That's the only time I've ever encountered where hearing the portion before the recording was a problem. Assuming that's the case, I'd recommend looking at two different things.I would still like to know how to start recording directly on a beat, as there must be someway to do it.
1) Research "pre-roll" in the manual. It should do what you want.
2) Use a folder for your entire project. (All tracks). Cut up this section and move it over so that you don't have to hear the music before it.
I sometimes have screwy issues with the snapping stuff. I probably just need to take 10 minutes and fully understand it some day...even though I'd like to think I pretty much fully understand it now.
you could also set a loop for the portion you want to record i guess that should start wherever you want it to and then the lanes make it very easy to edit. The other thing im thinking is check your quantize and set it to 1/8 or lower maybe if its on 1/2 or higher its snapping it there instead of where you want, idk im just trying to think of what would cause that.
I use punch in recording for everything.
So it will only record between the locators.
I have macro buttons setup to start recording a bar before the locator.
Works great, it will start recording where ever you set the left locator.
They can be moved with snap off to get off the grid.
I never finish a mix, just abandon it.
