Default Compressors??

Hello
I'm been learning mix down techniques, and I was wondering about a built in compressor in Cubase Le 4,... I have a brickwall limiter, but it is my understanding that a compressor is way different, any ideas as to the name of a built in VST plugin that came with my version of cubase? And if not, any recommendations for good compressor vst downloads?
Thank you in advance

It's called Dynamics. It has a compressor, a limiter and a gate.

The issue of compressors is long and complex. You need to read up on the subject - there are hundreds of sources of information. You can start here:
15 Uses For A Compressor

I can't simply give you some settings and then you're good to go. Every song, sometimes every track, needs different handling.
I've got a millon vst compressors and there's more being written everyday, it seems, but here some favorites to get you started. I think "Dynamics" that comes with Cubase is probably a good piece of software but it seems difficult to use. Try these:

The Endorphin from digitalfishphones is superb. The Classic from Kjaerhusaudio is very useful and the Antress stuff is beautiful to look at - CPU intensive, and I think some of it works really well also.

Antress Modern Plugins

Kjaerhus Audio - Professional Audio Plug-ins

Just a heads up, the compressor that comes with Cubase is fucking terrible. You could probably find some free VST compressors online that sound wya better. I don't agree. I don't consider it to be anything special, but I certainly don't consider it to be bad. It doesn't come close to my Distressor, but neither does respected plugins like the Waves API or SSL collections. At least that's my opinion.

I have an extensive beginners guide to compression in my home recording book which is very close to being finished if I wasn't so busy with sessions. This was day #7 in a row. It looks like I'll be at 9 or 10 before I can even start mixing the 5 projects I have going on.
