Default Can Cubase AI 4.52 automatically select GM sounds from HALionOne?

When importing a standard GM midi file an Cubase AI 4.52, can Cubase be set to automatically select an appropriate GM sound from HALionOne for each MIDI instrument track

Under File/Preferences/MIDI/MIDI File/Import Options I have ticked “Import To Instrument Tracks”

MIDI files do import successfully into instrument tracks but I then have to manually assign each track to an appropriate VSTi and patch.

Default Re: Can Cubase AI 4.52 automatically select GM sounds from HALionOne?

I don't have instrument tracks available so not up on that. Also I don't use Halion one.
You might well ask, and well it is you might ask "Why are you answering this question?"
It is this:

SMF's have patch changes embedded on each midi track to select the correct GM patch. If they are sent to a GM compliant sound module that is set to accept patch changes they should set themselves up correctly as far as voice selection goes.

You can set the default midi port of a newly created midi track so when you create a new track it will go the synth you want but I don't think that can be done with soft synths. What I do is create a template with the voices I want on a standard set of tracks then import a midi and strip the patch changes off of it and move the tracks up to the tracks set up in the template.
Something like that should work for your purposes if you had a bunch or tracks setup going to halion then when you import a midi file select all and drag them up to the tracks. Should be some way to get a workflow to you save time.

Other programs are better at being a SMF player than cubase, I use BIAB to create midi files then take them into cubase to alter them.
