Default Basic problem with Cubase

Hi
One silly problem multi tracking with Cubase. If I record a guitar track then try to record another, the sound of the 1st track is recorded on the 2nd track rather than kept separate on the 1st. I can't see anyway to keep all the tracks separate until I want to mix them later. The instruction manual doesn't go into how set up ip/op ports or whatever correctly to be enable this basic requirement of multi tracking !
Any ideas anyone?

You've got the input for the track set to the whole mix, some cards use "what U hear" or a master send, whatever, it's what you use to do a final mix. You need to set the input of the track to where the guitar is.

You may have to set this up in VST connections if you have no options available when you try and change the track input.

Yes I think the problem is it's recording 'what you hear' meaning the 2nd track I record also has the sound of the 1st track mixed in.
However there's nothing in the cubase help regarding changing inputs !!!
Quit extraordinary there's nothing about such an important thing.
All I can see in the panel is to change from input 1 to input 2 whatever that means. It certainly doesn't solve the problem !

It doesn't sound like a Cubase issue. It sounds more like an issue with your audio interface routing or if you have a mixer plugged into your interface it may be the routing there. You just need to figure out where your output is getting routed back into your input. What make is your audio interface and what is your signal path?

Was trapped in Thailand for a while (protesters shut down the airports). Not such a bad place to be trapped actually.

Spent a week cleaning and feeding elephants at the reserve up in Chang Mai. A few days climbing in Rai Leh and far too long in Bangkok.

p.s. I am now completely addicted to Thai massage. The only problem is that here in the states you can't get a 2 hour massage for $12 like you can there. <sigh>

You are correct. Thanks also to TACMAN's advice as problem now solved. I needed to switch from recording 'what you hear' to 'spdif' on my creative labs soundcard consol. Because although I'm using the line6 UX2 to record it's plugged into the spdif ip on my creative labs soundcard :-)
What's not clear is the significance in Windows XP control panel of whether I select my UX2 for sound recording or instead select my creative labs card for sound recording. It seems to make no difference !
