Angry Background music on vocal track!!!!

Hi guys,
I'm new here and fairly new to production. I'm a hip hop MC (don't hate me for it!) who's recently got into production. When i first started I had no problems, everything was working fine then my pc crashed and I had to re-install EVERYTHING!

I tried recording a new track for a mix tape i'm working on and everything was going fine until I looked at the waveform for the vocal track and noticed what appeared to be a lot of extra noise. When previewing the vocal track I noticed that the backing track had recorded onto the vocal track aswell!!!
I've just started using Cubase SX3 and my first thought was "it's a newbie mistake" so I tried recording the same track in Adobe Audition 1.5 which I was currently using. Unfortunately the same thing happened, backing track on the vocal track.

I recently bought some new gear for my home studio including a Tapco Mix60 mini mixer and a pair of Tapco S8 monitors. My mic was plugged into the mixer which after checking and double checking IS wired up correctly.
Then I had the thought that it could be my sound card. I'm currently using a Soundblaster Audigy 4 card which after reading a few posts on here is probably no a very wise choice!

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated as it's beginning to fry my brain!!!

Thanks in advance

Rich

So assuming you're wearing headphones while recording (i.e. your backing tracks are not bleeding into your mic) I'm guessing that your backing tracks are routing out of your computer, into your mixer and then are getting routed back into your computer along with your mic signal. Make sure that your computer audio output is only getting routed to your headphones and not back into your computer.

In the Audigy Control panel, there is an option for your recording channel, it sounds like you've got it set to record "what you hear" i had the same problem years ago.

You need to set it to line or mic in? i'm guessing if your using a desk set it to line, and plug the output from your desk into your line input?

Hope that sorts out your problem, "what you hear" basically means everything coming out of you speakers including your backing track and vocal will get recorded, setting it to line will mean it just records the incoming signal

Hi I'm experiencing the same problem with all tracks.
The previously recorded tracks bleed onto the track being recorded. I am using the headphone out for monitoring on a Hoontech 2000 external a-d converter. Would this account for the problem, since I've used the same setup previously without a glitch.

I think that your mindows mixer is setup to record the stereo mix instead of the microphone input.

Edit: sorry just read what Markah wrote and totally agree with him.

I solved my problem! It was a simple thing of turning on the monitor button on the vocal track in cubase. My soundcard and mixer were working fine all along! As far as the windows mixer issue, mine is set to line as I have a connection from the main out on my mixer into the "line in" input on my soundcard and "line out" from the soundcard to tape in on the mixer. Hope this helps
