Default Adding effects to VSTi (Cubase SX3)

I have always wanted to know if it is possible to add a audio effect(Like reverb or distortion) to a VSTi without bouncing down the track to audio. You can do this in Cubase 4!
I had an idea that you could possibly send the sound from the output of the VSTi to a track that is audio there you could add an audio effect. Then send that track to the master out.
I just dont know how to do this or if it's even possible.

My love goes out to the user who tells me how to do this.
My respect goes to the user that confirms this is definetly not possible as this cost me a lot of work and time.

Sure. I've done this zillions of times in Cubase SX3. You can add effects in this manner through either the Effects Sends or through the inserts.

I was talking about Audio effects not midi effects. Inserts only gives you access to midi controls. I was asking about say Reverb. Any ideas

I'm pretty sure he understood you were talking about audio. You simply assign the VSTi instrument to an audio track and then add effects, insert and sends.

Try page 292 in chapter 12 of the manual.

Im not sure what you mean about assign a VSTi to an audio track.
If I open a midi track and assign say Musiclabs realguitar. Then I want to add some reverb to it.I click inserts and it gives a short list of about 10 inserts like chorder or apache ect. But I want assign distortion or reverb. Is this possible without bouncing the track to audio?

What you want to do is open your mixer (f3), find your MIDI track, expand your mixer and apply effects there....they will all show up....Should work...

Every VI has a corresponding audio type track in the mixer. Forget MIDI, you don't need to touch the midi tracks in the mixer. If you still can't see it, solo a MIDI track, open the mixer, and you'll see that there's more than one track with activity on it... the one that ain't midi is the one you add the inserts/sends to.

Forget Will Smith "You are legend"
10 years I have been working with Cubase and then my mate got Logic. I had a mess about and was impressed by the fact you could add audio effects to midi. Then I started thinking this must be possible in Cubase. All the time I waste bouncing down aimporting in then adding effects then wanting to change something in midi so having to go through the process again. It's a pity this is hidden away.
It has also solved a seperate problem I was not looking for to do with midi tracks ignoring paning and volume control.
Thankyou you have won the love of a good hetro man.

MIDI is data. It's impossible to add reverb to the number 7 or a Word document. MIDI is just numbers. However, if you trigger a synth or sample with MIDI THAT will output an audio signal which you can then process with reverb and such.

I'm in a bad mood, but here goes. Usually people that refuse to read manuals at least trust my advice because I've used Cubase on several hundred songs. 95% of them where I was paid by a 3rd party. I do have to say, it's very rare for a person to refuse to read the manual and refuse to take my advice. What was the purpose of the post, then?

I'm not always right, but in this setting, I'm as positive that my advice about inserts and sends was correct as I am sure about the existence of gravity.
