Default Vintage Fender Bassman

I want to buy one of the old Bassman heads for my bass rig. I'm playing in a pop band with alot of influence from the Beatles, and Oasis. I've only used the Bassman once, and I think it sounded great. I've heard alot of different things about the amp, but all the information I find is mostly relevant for its use as a guitar head. Anybody have any information I can use? (What years are good, silverface vs blackface, etc)
