I think when you mic a cab from two feet out you get the sound of the cabinet itself...it's bloom and standing waves etc. You also get the influence of the room on the bass freqs.

Why not? This technique gives you the room sound.
Sure, it's only as good as the sound of the room itself. That's why when you jam a mic into a speaker cone it really doesn't make a difference how good or bad the room is.

Here it is again...SansAmp Bass di and some compression. I personally use a DBX 163x comp/limiter. Cheap, fast and works for almost any type of music. I have used the same setup live and it kills there too! If you're on a budget I don't think you'll beat it!
I have also had good luck with the Studio Projects VTB-1 mic preamp, nice for the budget minded as it's a cool preamp too!
