Do not boil them!
Soak them in denaturated alcohol for 24-48 hours.
Water + Metal = RUST

Personally I love the sound of fresh strings, I know James Jamerson swore by them and he's a god, but to me they just sound dead, and I only boil my strings if Ican't afford new ones

why are bass strings so exspensive?

I heard Jame Tayor saying one time he boiled his guitar strings.
Now I do. Add a bit of lemon juice to cut through the oils.

They are just dirty. Clean them up and they sound like new.
I use a hair dryer to dry them. No Rust.

Another plus, is the strings fit right back on. I've never had them stretch like I've heard other people say they will do. They ain't rubber.
