Default Christmas bass options

Well... Finally I've decided I'm going to do something about my bass this Christmas. I currently have a Squier P-bass >.< (I know...) As everyone knows she's cheap but I've had her since I started playing and I have grown to the feel of it. The only problem this Christmas is a HAVE to spend over a grand (AU$1000) on a gearbox for my ski boat. I can't not do this. So I don't have much left over to spend on a new bass if getting one. I started to think of all my options and I thought giving the Squier a makeover might be an option instead of a new bass. I was thinking of converting it to active as I play many styles of music. I like abit of funk/slapping... But I am also a metal man and play that too, this is where the bass is lacking. I also play softer music (coldplay sort of stuff) for my pianist friend as well as a bit of Muse with him too.

I do my own recording and play many live gigs. I would like to use this bass to do that and achieve better results.

I am prepared to do all the fabrication myself as I am quite skilled with my hands and know how to wire up pretty much anything.

Any ideas on what I should do would be greatly appreciated. And suggestions on a good cheap (ish) bass better than my p-bass would also help. It doesn't have to be active a good passive bass tends to be better than a cheap active bass in my books.

Thanks.

I've recorded a few Squire basses and have been very happy with the results. With that said, it was a certain sound and certainly wouldn't be everyone is looking for all the time.

For metal, you really need a bass with some mean ass growl. Warwick is the name I immediately think of for metal land, but I'm sure there are many more. I have no idea about prices or even specific models.

Thanks. I'll look into that. What about the P-bass is it worth putting the money and time into making it a better bass?
