I'm not a bass player, but I've recorded a bunch of them. It always depends on the music.
I've got an old 50 watt Marshall from the late 70s that really likes bass. It gets used in one way or another on a lot of projects. Then again, a lot of times I run DI. Sometimes I run both. Sometimes I'll set the Marshall with the gain all the way up and keep the DI clean. That can be fun. Brandon

i run right into my firepod and then into tracktion with this VST....
http://www.kvraudio.com/get/1793.html its a very nice pug for getting guitars and basses to sound phat... now you have to mess with it but.. i love what it does with bass guitars and stuff. mix some EQ and compression as needed later and it gets you where you want to go! i also have used this plug on my strat running right in there and its pretty cool sounding also!

For DI, it depends on my mood and what I'm trying to accomplish.
I've actually heard night and day difference from switching from my Presonus M80 DI to my Vintech 1272 DI. Sometimes I use a Sansamp DI. Generally, I'd say that my Vintech is the way to go, but if I need to shape the tone of a terrible sounding bass, I'll use the Sansamp first. I don't use the M80 for bass anymore after a few night and day experiences. Brandon

Not at all, dude!
Bass hasn't changed all that much over the years in my opinion. I borrowed a Gallien Kruger a while back from a friend and never returned it. It's a fun amp. A lot of people snicker at it, but it's a real deal amplifier and it sounds like it with the right bass. It's hard to go wrong with a Fender Jazz by the way. Brandon

I haven't recorded anything yet as I am waiting for a reference amp for my monitors, probably an Alesis RA 100 or RA 300.
I have an early 1980s Japanese made Squire P-Bass which plays perfect- I LIKE it, it's also the best I could afford and I got lucky finding this old MIJ one- and an Ampeg Rocket-Bass B50R Amp. I just play here in my apartment- (songwriting is my mission) I will be recording the bass through a BOSS BR864 recorder so I may never use the amp or external effects for recording. I might try it though with a bass wah pedal. I'm actually not a bass player but plan to get reasonably good at it. Blues/Jazz. (jazz bass is cool, I love listening to a good upright bass player in a jazz ensemble)
