Default Bass Guitar: I need something versatile

Hey dudes.

I need a bass guitar that I can get a bunch of different sounds out of. This will be used 100% for recording. When I say "a bunch of different sounds" I mean that I need different character. I can always EQ it later on with Sansamp, or parametric EQ.

I'm looking for something with lots of clarity and midrange definition. I want this bass to be clearly heard. I have no need for big, thick, and deep bass that everyone thinks they want but really do not.

P-Bass... don't get the ones that everybody "pops" on... Rick's have a distinctive character and cut like there's no tomorrow but the P-Bass is a standard sound....

I only have 2 basses... Fender P/Jazz that I re-did the electronics and a Peavey T40. Not the best of basses, but I can get most of the characteristics I want from them...

I use the following to record them... amp/cab, api>sansamp, direct, software amp, and plugged directly into an 1176.

I've been very happy with the P-basses that I have recorded. Are there any certain models to avoid?

I've gone almost completely DI lately. I just seam to be able to get what I want easier than with micing. What software amps are you using when doing bass DI?

I've always wanted a "Beatle" bass. Agile has a model and J Turser has several. But...

I will probably buy a P-bass, most likely an Agile. Can't argue their reputation.

Stick with what you know is good.

Let me know how the Agile bass turns out. I've never used an Agile bass, but I'm anxious to hear what it would sound like. I'm expecting good things myself.

If your budget isn't too low, check out the Warwick Streamer FNA Jazzman, or Corvette FNA Jazzman. They have a large pole humbucker at the bridge and jazz pu at the neck, 3band eq, pickup selecter switch and pu blend, and midrange that will cut through anything.

Hmm. I'll give these a try! I've never even heard of a Corvette FNA Jazzman.

Money is ALWAYS an issue with me, unfortunately!!!

When I was down at Wageners, they used a $5,000 bass. It was a Spector and it was mind blowing!!! You can read about it here: http://www.recordingreview.com/artic...crophones.html

Too bad money is an issue!

That one is currently out of production but they pop up on ebay every now and again.

Sorry, I am a true Warwick fan and will not speak of the 'S' word! j/k

Have you recorded any Warwick thumbbasses? I have a NT 5str, it's not as versitile as the fna jazzman but it is MINDBLOWING! ;D

If you are having bass troubles on any of your current projects, I will whore her out for a small fee of Dos Equis and pizza.

Warwick is the answer to your bass problems in the studio.

Oh come on. Don't give me this Ford vs Chevy crap! A great bass is a great bass. Maybe you prefer the Warwick sound, but I'm pretty sure that I'd pick the Spector over a $200 Ibanez bass just about any day of the week.

I've recorded one Warwick bass in my life. I remember it being pretty good, but the band tracked live and I didn't get to really play with it.

Ahhh!!! http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...3&src=3SOSWXXA I'm not sure that I would buy a $5,000 bass if I had $10,000,000 in the back. OUCH!! I was thinking these would cost around $2,000 (which is still not cheap). I couldn't imagine paying that much cash for an instrument that will be barely heard in a typical modern mix.
