Yes it would be causing the problem. If when you load the file into Cubase, it loads as a single track, then you need to separate into individual tracks... your Master Track should be easily identifiable. To separate out into individual tracks, select the part and choose MIDI > DISSOLVE PART.

The List Editor is a great way to filter information to enable you to delete what you don't need.

Read the manual and all should become clear.

Hmmm. just realized you use a really old version of cubase. I don't remember how to separate out a MIDI file in that version.

Doing a video of how to insert a program change MIGHT still be worthwhile... I don't think that process has really changed since the Atari days...

No; when the MIDI file loads into Cubase it DOES HAVE separate tracks. If I save it first as a MIDI file in Midinoteplayer - it loads as separate tracks - each listed as guitar, trumpet, bass etc.

If I DON'T save it first as a MIDI file in Midinoteplayer - it also loads with separate tracks BUT each track is titled 'EXPLODED'

I chose a track and took a look at List Edit.

I ticked the filter boxes of all event types that I didn't want to see just leaving the 'control change' and 'program change' unfiltered. I could see start postion, length, val 1, val2, val3, event type and channel. Can't see how altering any of this would be relevant to my problem.

Thanks Richee - List Edit slightly different to the version of Cubase I'm using - but I should be able to get something from it. Gonna try and see if editing out and pasting in some of my own preferred details will have an effect. Cheers!
