Question Question about midi velocity

Hi everyone...

I have this problem with recording midi in Cubase SX3...

When I record a midi track every note is recorded with a diferent velocity because as normal you never hit the keyboard keys with the same intensity, so the question is..

Does anyone know if Cubase SX3 has any kind of setting where i can record midi with the same velocity no matter how soft or hard i hit the keys?????

A) Are you absolutely sure you want to make every note the exact same velocity? You'll be completely sucking any hope for a human sound out of the performance.

B) There are ways to do this automatically by using the MIDI plugins. I'm not sure specifically how as I've never needed to do it.

C) You could always just draw a line to even out all velocities at the bottom of the screen.

No no it's not that I always want every note with the exact same velocity

...But sometimes I actually do..when I record a snare sound for example, in that case i woud "normaly" want the snare to sound the same way...it's just, you know, I just wanna save some time and only go to the midi editor when i really need it.

But thanks anyway

I've got a feeling that you won't like the sound of a snare triggering the same sample at the same velocity every time. The snare is one of the instruments you want to vary the most.

hey by the way

when u're finished with all the midi sequencing process and get into the mixing, do u just leave the tracks MIDI or do u turn everything into audio?

'cause a lot of VSTi aloud u to do EQing, compressing, delays, reverb and even mastering so u can sequence MIDI exactly how u would like it to sound on your final masterpiece

I've heard from some pros that u can actually do the mixing and not necesarly turn everything into audio...and some others tell me to always work with audio...so I'm a little confuse..

what would u recomend?

Well, technically they are audio once they leave the synth/sampler. Cubase routes them to audio channels so the only big reason to convert the audio coming out of the synth / sampler to wav is to save CPU power for other things or maybe take advantage of some kind of editing that work works better in wav.

Generally speaking, if I'm just playing around or if I'm still in the tracking phase, I leave everything as MIDI being ran through the VST instruments. Once it gets time for serious mixing, I'll convert to wav.

I never use any of that stuff unless there is a good reason. (Mastering is a long shot for a VSTi). I prefer to use my 3rd party plugins in most cases.

I do not mix in the VSTis first transform every track to audio and then mix.
VST instruments transform MIDI to audio. Anytime you hit place, this "transformation" occurs. Are you saying you specifically convert the audio output from the VST to a wav file?

We have to be specific when dealing with technical issues to ensure that everyone gets the right idea.
