What's a good vst for a guy who has some experience with drum machines, and simply wants to put down some basic/intermediate beats? Additionally, I'd like one with some good pre-programmed beats for when i need to quickly sketch ideas. Thanks.

I think you'll find that Superior drummer 2.0 is the VST of choice here.

I haven't tried the alternatives, but I started with Superior Custom & Vintage and went to Superior 2.0 shortly after it came out. I'm very happy with the sound and performance.

I like BFD for realism. Superior has not won me over yet. Actually I am a drummer and a bit of a drum freak, so I have a lot of different drum software, and hardware. EZdrummer is aptly named and will get you up and running fast. You can just pull the supplied midi grooves into your track.

also, i should note that the style/sound i like vacillates between two genres: classic rock like the velvet underground to droning/looped hip hop. so, i'm looking for something that can produce these sounds, and hopefully have some presets or pre-programmed loops already in place for sketches. maybe a collection of samples would be best? can someone point me in that direction as well?

thanks again.

Superior drummer ships with tons of midi perfomances from studio drummer NirZ, I have something called the Toontrack monster midi pack as well which is phenomenal. You will find what you're looking for or atleast close enough that you can edit it to your liking. SD2 is a VSTi or standalone program, it will work fine with cubase. Visit Toontrack.com for more info.

So you have significant experience with Superior 2.0?

The reason I ask is because I think Superior Drummer 2.0 is top notch stuff. The recordings I've heard with BFD have also been top notch.

I don't have significant experience, but I do have a bit, a song or two. That is why I said it has not won me over yet, I do really want to like it....

I researched all the kits recommend in the thread, and they all seem to have steep learning curves. Is there a more basic/simple vst with high quality sounds?
