Default Newbie MIDI question

I have purchased a oxygen 8 midi controller in hopes that it would help me develop drum tracks. I am using cubase LE as the host. using the im7 vst plug in at the moment. I Cubase recognizing the controller, but i dont understand how to get it to use the midi controller to convey sound. when I open the Key editor for the midi track I can click on the on screen keyboard with the mouse and hear the sounds but I cant hit the keys on my controller and get them. Can anyone give me some guidance on what to do next? Do i have to program a drum map? is it harder than it should be to accomplish what i need to do, or is it just a newbie mistake that im going to kick myself for missing? Thanks for the help in advance.

Is the controller selected as the input device on the MIDI track?

yes, it is and the Im7 is the output. Do I have to program the drum map to corespond with the oxy 8? Or, should the default drum map work for the basic function that I am looking for this thing to do?

Drum maps are a convenience, not a necessity. But they can screw things up. If you have it set u pas a drum track, try setting it back to a regular track, and see if it helps. You might find that your Oxygen 8 is transmitting in a different octave to what you thought. Try recording a part... do the notes appear in the track? Regardless of whether you can hear them, if its a regular track, you should see the notes appear. IF you can see them, but can't hear them, its probably either that the notes don't correspond to notes on the VI you're using since you know that the channel can actually communicate to the VI. If it never records them, then it is a communications problem between your keyboard and the track.

What happens when you just record a MIDI track? Do you get little dots to show up? Do one of those Jerry Lee Lewis slide thingies up and down the entire keyboard a couple of times.

What about when you play the track back?

I've got a feeling this isn't just drum mapping. I have a feeling this is routing of the MIDI track itself or the channel of that MIDI track.

Okay guys..... I finally got it working. This unit comes with a midi to usb conection there are 2 midi plugs one is for the usb signal to the pc and the other is for the keyboard signal. I HAD THEM PLUGGED IN BACKWARDS!!!! As soon as I switched them around I started getting a signal and finally I am getting the results that I had hoped for. Thanks for your help on this issue fellas.
