Default MIDI through sound interface..help

I have connected UMX-49 to my Edirol UA-25 sound interface, where a MIDI cable goes from the UMX-49 to the "MIDI - IN" of UA-25. Also, UMX-49 is connected with my PC through a USB cable.

IS this connection ok? , considering that the MIDI cable is working? Because when i configure settings in one of the software(NUENDO) and specify "UA-25 MIDI IN" as MIDI input ... i hear no sound , but when i specify USB audio device . i hear sound....i.e. it makes no difference whether i connect UMX-49 with my sound interface or not.

please help.

thanks

I wouldn't connect the MIDI controller twice. I would either use the MIDI cable or use the USB cable, but I wouldn't do both.

I agree with Brandon, though I'm also curious as to why the MIDI connection isn't working for you. It is odd.

The USB one is the one you want though. This has a better throughput than a MIDI connection, and although for input you're unlikely to see any difference, there is a small one.

thanks for the reply...

the USB connection is done so that i do not have to use batteries or a adapter for power supply....

does it make any difference in the sound quality or the output of the MIDI sound?

Does it make any difference in the latency? currently i see input latency of around 6 ms and output latency of aro8und 5 ms....

Yep, makes sense.

MIDI has no sound, period.

Think of MIDI as a series of instructions to other instruments to play sounds. Similar to a conductor - "hey you, play now. You over there, stop playing..." etc.

5-6ms??? that's marvellous. Relax and enjoy it - many have to put up with waaaay more than that. And besides, to your ears, 5ms is practically indistinguishable from zero.

thanks for the reply...

actually when i try to record through my MIDI controller....It doesn't get recorded as i play it...i mean it gets recorded with the small delay....

I am not sure why is it happening when the latency is just 5-6 ms....

what could be the problem... am i not using them correctly?

Are you talking about recording to a midi track? There's a manual section about this (it can even record too early!) which explains how to adjust it. Sorry I can't be more specific - I can't access my manuals from here.

What sources are you using for sounds? Is there the same delay when you play back what you've recorded?
