Well also to add to this convo, from my readings and slight experience with MIDI, you won't get a 100% realistic sound, but to say it's not realistic at all is a stretch. You will get very great sounds with the equipment they make nowadays, sometimes it even sounds too perfect, but to the trained musical ear, the slight subtleties in different guiarists or violin styles, etc, will not be present because there is no human factor.

All in all, MIDI is great and I don't care who says it, most patches sound great and are capable of making incredible music.

Yeah, there are some vst instruments that I have played around with that kind of scared me with how real they sound.

The Halion Orchestra instruments are exceptional, in my opinion. The tuba is chock full of tube. Uh?

Agreed! I dont know where I'd be if it wasnt for MIDI. It has such a lot of useful applications once u get to know it. The whole EZ Drummer series is an excellent example too.

Music has went a few different routes in the past 30 years or so. Instruments don't have to be realistic in many genres of music.

With enough blood, sweat, and tears you can DEFINITELY make some extremely close emulations of a human being. It'll fool 99% of the public...maybe more. However, there is something to playing by your own set of rules.

I'm not big on emulation.
