Default MIDI question

There are programs that notate MIDI information into standard music notation, correct? Well, are there any programs that convert music notation into MIDI?

I know SX3 has it's "score" mode. I've never used and probably never will. It seams logical to me that if it can convert to musical notation, it should be able to do the opposite.

I'd look into it more. Cubase SX3 is extremely well thought out. It's clear they've been building recording software for over 20 years. There are times when I say "I wish it had this!" just to find out that it can do it.

I'd take a day and just research the features that SX3 has. It will probably do everything.

Do you mean scanning sheet music and converting to notes? If so, I don't believe there is a program out there that will do a good job. I have PhotoScore Professional which is a paid upgrade to Sibelius (score writing software). It sucks. It really really sucks. It's quicker to write the music out by hand because of the many things it can't handle, or do well enough.

If you just want to input notes and have it play back, I would suggest using either Finale or Sibelius. Both are operational optimized for fast input. I prefer Sibelius, but have friends who prefer Finale.

What I was trying to say was- write music notation in a sequencer or some program and have it convert it to MIDI information.

I'm JUST starting to use MIDI and it's a bit confusing for more complex pieces(piano, strings). I already know how to write regular notation and if I could just write out music like that with a mouse and then have it convert to MIDI for further editing that'd be cool

Interesting! So you are better at writing notes down on a staff than you are beating on a keyboard or mouse? That's kind of amazing really! What are you trying to sequence?...Beethoven?

Cubase does it for sure, so since you have it, see how you get on with it. For me, Sibelius is much quicker, but who knows.

Yeah, I've studied a bit of music theory and it's easier for me to write out orchestration parts since I'm not a good enough musician.

I think the concept of MIDI is really neat and I'm just trying to learn as much as I can.

I was actually trying to do a mock up of the Star Wars main theme heh

Oh okay. That makes a lot more sense.

For most playing, I find that midi makes it really easy to make up for crappy playing. Of course, you end up sounding a little stiff with excessive quantizing, I'm convinced the general public 85% wants that.

You might, and I stress might, find it quicker to use the piano roll editor in Cubase than inputting notes in a score. That is my preferred way of working, as a musician who reads and writes well, but who doesn't play the keyboard accurately enough to use a direct input method. I'm pretty fast with Sibelius, but I still find it quicker to use the piano roll editor in cubase. Much easier to add in human touches, cc's and good stuff like that.
