Kontakt 2 Tutorials

I just ordered Kontakt 2 today to use with Cubase SX. I was curious about tutorials. Is Kontakt 2 tough to learn? I'm familiar with the smaller Kontakt sampler included with the Quantum Hardcore Bass samples, but I've never used any other sampler.

Do I need to order a DVD or something similar to quickly conquer the learning curve?

I actually ordered the Kontakt2 crossgrade for $269 that includes a tutorial DVD, but I didn't know if that would be good enough.

I've got an EP that must be completed by August 15th (which is about 2/3 done) and will require the use of Kontakt2. So, it's important that I learn the basics of Kontackt 2 as quickly as possible.

As far as I know, the tutorial DVD is the only thing there is. I hear its supposed to be good. I learned it by using it (just like I learned everything else). Don't rely on NI's manuals - I think they're written by a fourteen year old... they really suck. But I think their tutorial DVD is presented by a real power user and you should get some good insights into its capabilities. I didn't find it hard to pick up without the DVD mind you, and its one of the main reasons I chose it over GigaStudio. The GUI is nice, and thoughtfully laid out.

Okay great! That works for me.

From what I hear / read, it appears that Kontakt 2 has a lot of processing features to directly manipulate the samples. I'm not sure if I'll be using these much. I plan on using Kontakt as a way of replacing real instruments that I don't have access to. Hopefully, this simplies the learning process a little bit.

You can go as deep or stay as shallow as you like. Sections (like sample editing) stay hidden until you unhide them so things stay fairly tidy.

Good. On the "weuss" version of Kontakt that came with the Hardcore bass samples, I was kind of suprised to see "LFO" and other synth type effects right there on the main screen. I quickly figured out the system, but the GUI was clearly setup to "encourage" creative effects manipulation.

That is fine. I understand why they did it, but for me I'd prefer to have "simple" mode on. For me, the hard part is done in the sequencer. Asside from choosing the sample, there is extremely little else I would need from the Kontakt screen. That is, until I start my industrial record.

It will be easy to use out of the box... but if you want to make your own mini-sample library, it will take time and hair pulling if you aren't familiar with sampling and K2 architecture... The best k2 forum is in vi-control.net ... nice people there... once you get up to speed, I highly recommend getting into SIPS!
