Hi all, I was hoping someone here can give me some advice or sugest some reading on creating samples for MIDI use. I want to record some different types of percussion sounds and then seperate them into single notes so i can then use them as MIDI inputs. either record from my MIDI key board or manualy write them in a drum editor. I have not done anything along these lines so i need to start from the basics, Im not even sure if i am using the correct terminology in calling it sampling. Im not to bad with using the MIDI editors via VST's etc but i have no idea how to create new sounds for them. Thanks ahead for any help that can be given.

I have only worked with drumagog for this. It is cheap, rock solid and easy to use. There may be better programs for what you want but I doubt that they are easier.

Cheers Paul, I just had a look at drumagog on the net and it looks like the goods, however with the risk of sounding like a complete fool can you tell me the best way to collect the samples. As i said i am new to this sort of deal, i am pretty capable with more traditional recording using real instruments but not MIDI. Obviously i will record the percussion instruments on to an audio track in a simple beat form, but what do i need to do then to turn them into samples to input to drumgog.

Yeah Richie i have been doing it that way but WOW its a time consuming process having to put each beat down as an audio clip on a track. The application im using it for is to add Bass and tenor drums to some bagpipe tracks and it would be so much faster if i could trigger the drum sounds on a drum editor or via the midi key board. Thanks for the feed back i will try thre Drumagog demo and see if it does what i want and also get my head on the net and start reading about creating samples and see if i can achive what im after. Will let you you know Richie if i work it out because i will be using a bodrhan as well on some of these tracks.

Samples can be difficult. But if you can edit bank files, you just assign them (your sample) to GM instrument numbers. I have some hip-hop banks that are full of user sounds.

You can take a sound right off your track and record it as a drum agog file. It will automatically make it line up and be in phase. As an example here is one way I use it. I will have a drummer play there line and then I have them hit each drum at different volume levels at the end of each track with 5 or so seconds between each one. Then I will select which hit/s I will use when I am mixing. I have replaced a snare with one I did for a different album. It is easy. There are a billion tips and tricks but this should get you started.

| "You can take a sound right off your track and record it as a drum agog file." Thanks Paul for this tip but im still a little unsure. I have downloaded and installed the Drumagog demo but i dont unersatand how to take the sound and record it as a drumagog file. I have set the R and L markers and tried to copy and paste to the sample section of Drumagog but that does not work, will it work if i export that section of the audio track as an OMF file then browse in drumagog and inport that way. I hope im not being a pain in the A*** here but as i have said this is all new to me. [I]Samples can be difficult. But if you can edit bank files, you just assign them (your sample) to GM instrument numbers. Having a look at edit bank files but i still dont under stand what you mean by "SAMPLE" is it just an OMF file?

"............. so i need to start from the basics, Im not even sure if i am using the correct terminology in calling it sampling. Im not to bad with using the MIDI editors via VST's etc but i have no idea how to create new sounds for them." An actual sample is usually the best audio format on any system. With 88 keys, there is not always a need to make 88 samples. You just can change pitch up to point. "The application im using it for is to add Bass and tenor drums to some bagpipe tracks and it would be so much faster if i could trigger the drum sounds on a drum editor or via the midi key board". There should be GM banks that you can apply processing to without having to sample.

| http://www.drumputer.com/soundfont/marchperc3.zip This is a marching soundfont and the are tons of VST that load .sf2 file banks if you don't have the hardware device.
