Default Help: How can i record my drum set to use with audio sampler software?

I'm sort of a beginner when it comes to understanding MIDI percussion controllers and audio software sequencers but my intentions are to use the ALESIS ControlPad to trigger audio files I've created myself.

I use an apple computer so i suppose it just comes down to finding the right software as inexpensively as possible. Can you do such a task?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks-

You need a software sampler... actually...

You're entering a world of pain here. This is not a simple process, you could be looking at hundreds upon hundreds of dollars. The way I would do it is run through a DAW program (500 bucks), via a software sampler like Kontakt (250 bucks), and use the Alesis to send MIDI messages to the laptop, which could require a MIDI to USB convertor (100 bucks), and then to get the sound out of the laptop with any integrity, an audio breakout box worth at least 250 bucks...

There are some sampler devices out there, but you're just asking for trouble. If you REALLY need those sounds, then the expense is worth it.

Alright thanks for the advice. It sounds pretty discouraging, however I'm only looking into this as my ControlPad hasn't arrived yet.

So I suppose that the TsampX 1.0.5 for Macintosh OS Xfree standing sample program wont work with the USB/MIDI Percussion Pad. It's sorta surprising that there isn't a program to playback simple WAV or AIFF audio files.

Thanks for the Comment

There are economic alternatives however. You can get a soundblaster card that uses soundfonts and a free sequencer like Reaper. I'm not sure if reaper does midi but there are free sequencers that do, or inexpensive ones.

You may eventually want something better and will probably be buying the aforementioned products anyway.

Working your way up bit by bit is a good way to understand the complex processes going on.
