What audio interface are you using? Could this be a latency issue? What is your buffer set to?

I have no idea about that one. I use DFH Superior.

I'm looking at the EZdrummer software right now as a place to start and then upgrade to Superior 2.0 shortly after they release it (supposedly in April). What kind of host software are you using? I have little to no experience with MIDI (which I'm currently trying to rectify, with varying degrees of success), so how EZ (I've been drinking, so the pun looks funny to me, at least) is it to set up a track in Cubase (I use the lower powered SE3)?

I don't think it's a problem that you don't hear a sound for a second or two when you click the drum, it does that to me but I don't have any latency issues when programming a midi track, so other than to see what each drum sounds like you don't need to click individual drums.

As far as I'm aware on the other problem, when you drag a preset groove it puts it in a new channel (usually right at the bottom), I'm not sure if you can move this to your main midi channel or not though, but if not I don't see why it'd be too big a problem if not as long as you are mixing using the vst channels. Like I say though, I'm not 100% that this is how it works, I pretty much never use the preset grooves and stuff anyway.

Unless I'm misunderstanding your statement, that IS the definition of high latency.

I see what you mean, but there's a GUI for ezdrummer which displays a kit, you can't program drums off it but you can click on the drums to hear the sounds, for me there's usually a delay on this screen, but when the track is playing, or i'm in the midi editor it's all fine.

Don't know if you're using this or not, but Cubase LE doesn't support drag and drop.

When I use EZdrummer, I drag the midi file onto the desktop, and then import it into Cubase.

A low latency audio interface is the best way. Check out the Home Recording Soundcard Wizrd.
