I have a feeling I haven't loaded Timidity correctly! - there's nothing in the 'directory' apart from c:\timidity\musix and underneath 'soundfonts' there's only a340.sf2

It might be just the OS not showing you everything unless you are Admin. This is the place you might put your new sound fonts (you can config the excellent eawpats, too, but that is some work) files.

Yeah; but where are the soundfonts in Timidity and how do I find them?

The file you found is a .sf2 soundfont that came with the package.

One soundfont. But I wonder if you know what a soundfont is : )

I wanted to check one thing-out on my end. My Magix does not show any reading of the Tim soft MIDI samples . It does give me the standard GM instruments - 1-128. I loaded a soundfont that is not GM into Tim and Magix does not pick any of that up. This is not unusual because most programs don't really do any reading of samples - they just give you GM instrument numbers.

I loaded FM Dreams, which is a bunch of FM samples. I cases like this you have to reference you printout of the banks to reference the correct instrument number as a GM translation.

Applications like Anvil Studio will actually read a sound blaster card and let you see the banks and instrument samples within a loaded soundfont.

My SynthFont sequencer has a companion soundfont viewer, but I haven't really used it because I already know what's in my soundfonts.

Ok I appreciate your help in this but let's cut to the chase - how do I locate the samples in Tim or when I'm in Cubase?

GM is standard. Rock organ is always instrument 19.

I have an older SE and you select the instrument in the left parameters bar - under prg (19). Most programs show the number and instrument - 19. Rock Organ.

I had to enter numbers 1-128 in the programme slot of the track inspector in Cubase but at least I can hear the samples - so are the instruments numbered the same as in GM - ie Piano -1, Trumpet 57,?

How do I locate Funk Guitar for example? It's listed as 029 008 in Roland Sound Canvas
