Default Drum machine start/stop

Alesis sr16 drums, ( I know, it's old), Cakewalk Sonar 6

I want to have more control over the drum machine than "start at the beginning and stop when there's no more MIDI information in any other tracks." I do this thru the Option, Project menu.

What I want is "start when I tell you to, stop when I tell you to, and start again when I tell you to. "

Do I need an SR18 (or eq), or better software to do this?

Seems like the SR can start and stop with a footswitch, you could do that then disable the midi clock.

You don't want it in time with your sequencer?

You want to program these start stops or is this a live thing?

If program, easier to just put the midi in your sequencer and use the SR as a module.

are you using midi? hook up a midi to the out and if your interface has a midi input slap it in. the keybord will control the drum machine then.

OK, I guess I need to be more specific.

Yes, this is MIDI. My computer sequencer goes thru a Tascam US122, VoiceLive2, drum machine, and ends at a Yamaha piano.

My Sonar 6 software has this: Options, Project, Sync, Send MIDI sync, Transmit MIDI start/continue/stop clock. This is what I use to start the drum machine when the song starts. This is the only way I know of to start the drum machine with midi. I do not want to use my finger or a footswitch. I want the track is in sync with the drums.

What MIDI method, if any, is there available to start AND stop the drums as needed?

thanks

Your sequencer is sending a midi clock message (?start/stop).

You find out exactly what that message is, record it or look it up.

Then embed it in your track as needed.

Look it up on the midi sites but yes google.

Like this:

MIDI Messages
Songstuff: Midi Message Format

You use midi-Ox? Good program to see what the real midi messages look like.

Have the SR send out midi clock and see what it's sending when you push start.

Thank you. After some googling and the Sonar Help files, I found CC 4 is 'footswitch.' That's the only good news. I can't seem to find the right data to control the start/stop. I'll keep at it.. maybe that OX program will help.

This shouldn't be so difficult!

I used the OX Midi sync transport. It started and stopped the drum machine just fine. That's great, but I can't translate any of what's in the log file to something I can use. (

I'm getting the sinking feeling Start and Stop are Events I don't get to put in my tracks.. as this is designed to start and stop the entire song. But we'll see where this goes.
