Well ... you can do several useful things with midi ...

At it's simplest level - controlling one keyboard from another, or a rack from a keyboard can be useful in live or studio situations.

As far as recording - I (as a keyboard player) usually record everything MIDI first, because it is much easier to edit, punch, correct, whatever than audio. It is also then very easy to try different sounds or variations of patches without having to repeat the performance. I then use that MIDI recording to "play" the keyboard or soft synth I want to record and lay that down to audio.

Not sure exactly what you are asking - do you have a specific question?

well -first, you have to have somethng that records MIDI (most computer DAWS like SONAR, Cubase, Logic, etc. will) and something to send out a MIDI signal - usually a keyboard although there are guitar, wind, drum. etc controllers that can too - I'll stick with a keyboard - a synthesiszer - as an example.

First of all MIDI is NOT audio in any form or fashion, You can not "convert" MIDI to audio in the same way you can, say, convert a wav file to an mp3.

Are you familiar with the old player pianos? The ones that use a roll of paper with a bunch of holes in it to "play" the piano? Well - a MIDI recording is essentially the electronic version of a player piano roll. It's just a bunch of data that records what note was played, when it was played, how hard it was hit (velocity), how long it was held, etc. Then you can "play it back" and it, much like a piano roll, will take the place of your fingers and play the instrument for you. The neat thing is you can use it it play ANY sound on any midi capable instrument - a synth, an electronic piano, a module, or "soft synths" which are just sounds that can link into your computer DAW.

What can you do with MIDI? Let me point you to this post I made awhile back that tells about some of the power of recording this way.

Why MIDI rules the World (and some don'ts)

What do you mean by "I have this piece of MIDI prepared" - does that mean you have a MIDI file you recorded inside of a DAW? Or on a sequencer on a keyboard?

The general idea is that your midi file (if that's what you have) will need to "play" something and you will audio record that something. If it is an external synth/module - you record it just as if you were playing it- regular audio. If it is a soft synth inside a computer, the process will vary a little bit depending on which software you have.

I agree - telling us something about your recording set-up would be helpful.

You certainly could! You'd have to run that MIDI data into a synth or sampler. Guitar Pro uses it's own (fairly cheesy) synth to actually create the sound you here.

Quite often, you might have a midi song, or even just a track (piano, for example) that sounds really good and you don't want to change it, or maybe you think you won't play an actual piano much better yourself.
You can take L and R sends out of your midi device, into two tracks of your recording gear and record them as audio tracks. Of course, you lose all editing capability (which is the strength of MIDI) once the song is finished.
It might be a drum MIDI track you've downloaded, or even made yourself, and this can form the basis for your song. You might not be inclined to change it, so just add bass, guitars, keys, vocals, whatever, and it becomes an audio track among many audio tracks.

That's my main use of MIDI--as a starting point, to be converted to audio as soon as I'm happy with it.
