Default Casio CTK-671

So I have no idea how to do anything with midi, but I'm rooting around in the back of the thrift store and they have this perfect condition, never used Casio with the manual, AC adapter, foot switch, stand, it even has the original cloth cover for the keys and the kid working is getting ready to put it out on the shelf for $50.00 and I asked if he'd take $20.00, I was kinda joking and he say's OK.

So now I have this thing and its midi I/O GM-1 compatible whatever that meens. Can I use this thing productively? Here's a link:

CTK-671 - Portable - Musical Instruments - Products - CASIO

I should be able to do basic stuff right? I just need a midi cable to go to one of my interfaces with midi I/O right?

Even if the built in sounds really suck (and they probably do), you've got a 61 key keyboard for $20... that's a bargain!

MIDI connectivity will get you started but you'll also need a sequencer to record your midi creations into. Then you'll also need to either get them to play back properly through the keyboard (which might be harder than you'd expect), or use sounds inside your computer. For the latter, you should really look into a pro-sound card or audio interface. Otherwise, the latency is going to be so bad that you'd never be able to use the keyboard to play back the sounds in your computer.

So, the big question is, what do you want to get out it? That will determine what you need to buy next.

I have a couple of interfaces, one is a USB 2.0 Tascam US 122L which is OK and then I have the Phonic FireFly 302 which is 1394 and pretty good, especially for the latency, so it should work good. The Tascam came with GigsStudio so I have tons of samples. As long as I can play around with it - it should at least be somewhere to start, it is confusing. Theres no mod wheel whatever that is, at least I don't think there's one.

I just ordered a couple of cables. It will be interesting. I've already learned how hard it is to make good recordings. I have Cubase LE and it's very powerful, it just takes a long time to learn this stuff.
I think I can I use this to put drum sounds together.
Thanks for the heads up.

Just to make you feel better, I use a Roland XP-10 as my MIDI controller. It generally goes on Ebay for $40 or so. It's so cheap that someone just gave it to me!

I've got some guides that will help you on the MIDI thing. Check out the member's only guides in my signature.
