Instead of creating a whole new thread I decided to branch off of this because I was interested in ddrum as well, they have killer looks and from their user reviews they have killer sound. I was interested in more of a high end kit like the ddrum Diode Fly 5-Piece Shell Pack, its an acrylic drum kit http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...ack?sku=445232 here it is at Musicians Friend for $1649.99. Thats not a bad price at all for an acrylic set. I've heard people play on them before and man are they loud! Would like to know if anyone has any experience with ddrum as their high-end stuff ie over 1000$ seems like they are pretty legit. |

Irish614, Those ddrum acrylics look like a sweet set indeed! You are correct in that the price is right also! I would invest in those if I wasn't saving up for a vintage set of "jellybean" Ludwig Vistalites. Remember that the attributes that make the acrylics a great stage drum, also makes them undesirable in the recording studio. Not that you can't record them, it's just that acrylics wouldn't be most recording engineers first choice. Keep us posted! Lump

I'm pretty dumb when it comes to drum specifics. What makes them shitty in the studio, Lump? Brandon |

Brandon, No, Bonzo used standard sized maple shells in the studio. It is a common misconception though, he made Ludwig Vistalites famous through that shitty " The Song Remains The Same" movie. He also used maple shelled Ludwigs for the majority of his live work, it's just that whenever that movie was filmed (1973) he was using Vistalites on stage. For the longest time TSRTS was the only visual record of the imfamous live Led Zeppelin and everyone assumes that Bonzo used those lovely amber Vistalites exclusively. Jimmy Page played Danelectros and Teles on occasion also. Eddie Kramer says the question he gets asked the most is how he captured that John Bonham drum sound. He used minimul mics, nothing close, and the rest was the skill of the drummer, in this case arguably the greatest drummer in rock n roll history. The most compelling reasons to buy an acyric drum set are for live purposes. They look striking and those shells vibrate wildly; all characteristics that are very desirable on stage, and unnecessary in the studio. In the studio the abundance of resonance causes ridiculous mic bleed, and has a tendency to carry the beat on and on and on thus muddying the mix. I like a shitload of resonance, probably more than most drummers, but I think recording acyrics would require a lot of dampning, which kinda defeats the purpose; basically you would be trying to make an acrylic drum set sound like wood. It wouldn't be impossible to record acyrics at all. For certain situations they may even fit the bill. Lump

Okie dokie. I went to a site a few years ago that talked the recording of When The Levee Breaks and it had a picture of John playing those amber clear thingies. I could have swore that they were mic'd up for recording, but I've sworn a lot of thing I don't know shit about and been totally wrong. I get what you are saying with the resonant thing. Brandon |

yea I'm not worried about the recording situation, I could still use my Exports to record, they record pretty well. I am just aiming for the killer looks from the acrylic kit and the volume projected from them. Thanks for the responses guys |

The difference a set of Pearl Exports and a set of $5,000 Pearls is tiny in a recording situation when compared to a great performance vs a mediocre performance, a great sounding room vs a mediocre sounding room, and a great engineer vs a mediocre engineer.

Acrylic drums play and sound like ass. They did back when people fell into that fad in the 70's and they do now... They are hard to tune, and the response is similar to hitting cardboard box... Wood drums can look just as cool and always play better. Acrylic is just another in a long line of cyclical drum fads. Next will be full length lugs and power toms again... You might as well pick up some roto toms to go with that acrylic kit too....
