I'm in a funk band and we include some rapping in our songs. It might not be the best rhythmically or stylistically, but it goes over well with the crowds...
This was recorded with all acoustic instruments. No loops, no samples... http://www.funk.richiebee.ca/01%20Beckoning.mp3 |

It's not unheard of, but it is certainly not the norm. Just keep in mind that recording drums is probably the most difficult of all instruments. You have to really know what you are doing in terms of compression, EQ, mic placement, and pretty much every other engineering principal. Brandon

I was kinda hoping live drums, and other instruments, would be the next evolution of rap. Not that I'm an expert in the genre. Actually I could see a human metronome like the late great groovemaster Alan Jackson Jr or the Motown session drummer Bernard Purdie pulling it off. It would take a certain kind of drummer who not only has superior time keeping abilities and a sense of groove, but who can also keep it simple, danceable, nasty AND interesting. Not a very long list of drummers who come to mind there. He or she is probably just waiting to be discovered and employed by an enterprising gentleman like Mr. Bytch Killa.

I plan to make some drum loops with live drums.I was aslo thinking of recording the clarinet too on some clips.U wit me?Then I can adjust this live sound on my computer.Mannn this would be so real if I pull this off, which I am cause Im confident of my Creativity and passion for music. Thanks R.R.com for everythang Ive learn since march when I join.

Yeah. Looping would be the best place to start. Even with my very limited MIDI ability, and with all the MIDI drums that I've heard over the years, nothing beats the sound of a well recorded, finely tuned accousitic drum set. But there are some very realistic patches out there.
The clarinet idea sounds enticing also. I always thought a loop of Glenn Miller's "In The Mood" done right would sound interesting. Gene Krupa was the original groove drummer. Good luck and be sure to post your results here. Lump

Go for it, dude. Drums are in no way convenient, but there is something about a live band that the programmed stuff doesn't have. Then again, the programmed stuff has its place.
I like the idea of using real drums and a clarinet in a rap song. Go with it! Brandon

hey man, have you ever heard a rap song featuring Travis Barker in it? He uses live drums when recording and it sounds sweeeeet. Go to Aol.com and look up sessions- he did a aol session with The Game and played live drums in the background- with one arm I might add SICK. Good luck with your music and keep making it |
