Default Snare angle

Drummers,
Have you ever seen old photos of Gene Krupa playing? Ever notice the angle of his snare? Those old drummers played with the snare angled sharply away instead of the slight angle towards or even flat. I heard this was due to so many old drummers in New Orleans playing with marching bands and they just adapted the postion to the new fangled drum kits.

Anyhow, I noted that Steve Smith (of Journey fame) plays with his snare angled away also. I've been experimenting with it and I kinda like it. It's more comfortable than it looks, and rim shots really pop. I was wondering if anyone else has tried playing with their snare angled away.

I generally keep my snare mostly flat, with a very slight tilt towards my kick drum leg (right leg) so I have access to rimshots now and then but still have access to the whole drum head for complete dynamic control throughout the song.

Very interesting! I wonder what that sounds like!!

I could see this working with rock drummers who should be knocking the living shit out of their snare anyway.
