Default Help in Recording Drums....

Hello,
Guys, i really need some guidance and help in recording drums. I'm giving a link of a sample. I can't get the drum sound i need. Apparently, the overheads are not capturing the sound i need. Listen to it and tell me what i can do to make it sound more fuller, more happening. I'm using 8 mics, Xy rule on the overheads. Should i place a room mic as well for room ambience to make it sound fuller? Should i change the overheads configuration, maybe i muffled the sound to much, tell me people!

Sounds like your room has some echo IMO. Perhaps some acoustic foam would be in order. Should be some good threads about reducing echo around the forum. What kind of mics are you using? What kind of interface? What kind of software?

overall it doesn't sound that bad man. I like the snare sound if you are going for Blink 182 type music. However the kick drum is pretty terrible. It sounds like you are using your beater against a cardboard box. However this is easily fixed.

Do you have your mic inside the kick drum next to where the beater hits the head? If so move it back a little bit to pick up the boom a little more. It sounds to me like ALL beater. Otherwise move it to the outside of the drum and change it up that way.

What kind of mic are you using for your kick?

The overheads to me sound a little loud actually. However this is all subjective on my part and you can mix your drums and have your kick drum sounding however you want.

I use a room mic for my kit too but it's not something I would rely on for fixing your problems. I have an especially dead room, unlike yours, and I need it to give some depth back into my drums. Use a large condenser mic and that will give you a great room sound. But be careful it sounds like you already have plenty of reflective surfaces and you might get overkill on the room reverb sound.

I also find it a little bit hard to listen to drums in a recording without something else to hear it with. I have heard great drum sounds that stand alone and sound excellent turn muddy and flat in a mix. It's all dependent on what kind of sound you are going for and what kind of music you are playing.

Have fun with it, and listen to everyone and then do what you want.

Michael

Again I won't listen unless I can hear it right from this page. I like working on computers but, I don't like doing it when it on the same computer over and over. I am not leaving this site to listen to songs.
