I know this thread is old, but I always liked Alex Van Halen's snare sound. It varied from album to album, but it almost always had this snares half-on half-off sound I thought was great.

The snare from Quadrophenia is one of my favorites. Especially on "the real me."

I'm a big fan of the snare sounds found in Bullet for My Valentine's The Poison album.
