The first time I really listened to a snare and said "hmmmmm...." was (don't laugh fuckers) Kenny Aranoff's on John Mellencamp's "Scarecrow" album. To this day I try to get that canonesque crack outta my snare.
Mitch Mitchell of Jimi Henrix Experience fame got some great snare sounds, especially on "Are You Experienced?". Eddie Kramer's excellent production skills should probably get most of the credit. I always liked the subtle, complimenting sound Tommy Ramone achieved on the first couple of Ramones' albums. They could've really mixed the snare up front and muddied the sound. Tommy has never got the respect he deserves. He is very influencial. Lump

The Outfield's- Play Deep Album.........Alan Jackman's snare sound on this album is one of my favorites for a rock sound..... I have a similar snare programed on my kit but with less overhang

You actually like that snare?????? Are you crazy????
![]() Actually, I love the Outfield. Something about that band is so unique and so damn catchy. I'm guessing you grew up with the Outfield, so maybe "Your Love" is overplayed or whatever (maybe not), but I think it's the single greatest song of all time. (At least that I can think of right now). As for the snare, I always thought it was the most downright disgusting thing I've ever heard. It's so bad to me, that I put it into the "character" department. It's like getting a birthday card from your brother with a 500pound naked chick on it. Either way, the songs are so great that the snare is not an issue to me. I just think it's weird that one makes junk is another mans treasure. The funny thing is, I love the big reverb snares from that era. (I really like the drums on "Kyrie" by Mister Mister). I just hate this one. Again, the songs are so good that I don't care. Brandon

"character".....that is a good word to use on a good track Brandon
![]() It's the little things good or bad that make a track what it is.....and the big drums on that song help make the 3 piece type of sound work. (ok maybe 4 piece sometimes) The snare almost sounds like it has a bit of distortion in it like it was overloading the mic....there you a rock drummer beating the shit out of snare in the studio Brandon ![]() I saw The Outfield at a Baseball stadium in Amarillo, TX in 1986 which was the last date of a 13 month tour.....still the best rock and roll live show I think I have even seen.

Actually, I went back and listened to that snare sound. It sounded way....BETTER... than it did before. You are right, there is something about the high end of that snare that is a little weird to me... I actually think it's the very bright reverb they used. Either way, there is some chunk in that snare that I never really noticed before. It is a cool sounds. I can totally see why you dig it now.

Back from the dead! (Sorry if that's a bad thing, couldn't find any rules against this)
Anyway, my Favorite Snare Sound belongs to Darren King from Mutemath... Especially from the track "Chaos." It's boss, but somehow, not offensive, haha. |

One thing I hate, now that I listen to music differently than I used to, is the metal snares these days. Mostly talking about Killswitch Engage. I like the band and got the new album As Daylight Dies. Every hit sounds exactly the same. Even rolls, and flams. It's almost as if they put a towel over the snare and let the trigger sampler make a 90 pound rimshot every friggin hit. Very fake sounding.
There's a studio in my area here that all the metal bands go to, and is notorious for that. and the kids love it. |
