Default Drum Miking - To stand or not to stand?

Ok, this might be a stupid question, but I'm sure many of us can benefit from the answer...

In many live settings I see drum kits miked with clamps that clamp the microphone unto the actual drum. But, I'm assuming this sort of setup must not be good for studio purposes, right? I mean, I suppose that vibration and noise from the kit will transfer directly to the mics. So, I guess going with regular boom microphone stands that don't touch the kit should be better. Am I right?? Enlighten me.

That's the theory.

Probably.

You may find exceptions but most of us just use stands. My main reason is mic placement and mic selection. If I want to switch from 57s to Oktava MK012s on the toms, there are no good clamps for this.

With that said, it's been so long since I've recorded with the clamps that I don't remember what they sounded like.

whats your budget like? I've heard some pretty good reviews from the Audix ADX90's. If you've seen that America's Next Top Band, they use them and the drums sound sweet. They are small so you won't hit them with the sticks. Check them out. They clip onto the rims of the drums.

Hmm, I'll check those Audix mics out. So far I'm going with stands, but I might change my mind. Thanks, cheers!
