I've recently come to the conclusion that tastes in drum-mics vary wildly. You will probably get as many opinions as people you ask. There is a great shootout on another forum (Google "Drum Mic Madness") that is great if you want to check out different drum-mics against each other. You'll also see on this thread what I mean about opinions varying wildly... ![]() That said, it is fairly widely accepted that the Audix D6, Shure Beta52, Sennheiser 421 and AKG D112 are all good kick mics, although I don't care much for the D6 or Beta 52. In fact I honestly like a SM57 better on kick than a Beta52. I've also found a number of really affordable kick mics that really work very well IMHO. The SM57's you mentioned for toms and snare is a solid choice. They'll also work nicely for other sources. You might also wanna check out the Audix i5 for snare. For overheads I've also heard good things about Studio Projects C4's and the MXL 603's, but I haven't tried them myself. |

| Yes. They are great matched pencil mics. They work very well on many other acoustic instruments and capture choir or stage production very well too..

Four mics should be enough to capture your drumset, see Recording drums - tips |

you can buy a mic package on musicians friend that includes a shure beta 52 and 3 sm57's for $400. That will cover your bass, snare, and two toms. I would use a couple small condensers for overheads. Room mics are really nice, but you don't absolutely need them. If you do end up wanting one, get a large condenser. Rhode NT1 is really nice for the money and is great for vocals. its not a U87, but its only $230.
