Default Drum Machine -> Midi -> Samples

In another thread I mentioned that I had a Alesis XR-16 drum machine.
I can't believe this unit is still worth $200 CAN retail, I bought mine in 1990 for $350!

I was wondering if it is possible via midi to trigger drum samples in a software program, for example Fruity Loops.

I'm not a drummer, but it's still easier for me to tap out the rythmn that is in my head on the provided pads on the drum machine, rather than trying to replicate the 'feel' in the 'step' type interface in sequencers (like Reason). I could then go quantize it after or edit through the Piano Roll feature.

This way, I can play back a melody track, and 'practice' on my drum machine until I find a beat that I like, then record it to the sequencer 'pattern'?

Ok, so you want to use the Alesis SR16 as a midi controller, right?

If the Alesis has midi out (which is what Zzounds says) and that MIDI out can be triggered with the buttons on the SR16, you should have no problem setting this up.

I'm not sure if the Alesis was designed to work in this fashion, but it might work. You may find that the map is not setup properly for the sounds you want to trigger in your sequencer. So, for example, you may hit key #1 and it may not trigger any sound at all. You may need to go into your sequencer and setup a map that triggers the kick drum when you hit key #1.

If this doesn't work for you, any keyboard with midi out can do the exact same thing. I've been using a Roland XP-10 for a while now. You can get these ancient relics (but by no means vintage or even desireable) for abour $40 on Ebay. So, it's not like you have to drop a ton for a midi controller unless you have VERY specific needs.

I have an SR-16 and I trigger it thru Nuendo.
I set the time thru Nuendo and the Alesis SR-16 Follows.

You need to make the SR16 Slave. I cant remember the sequence but it is in the Midi Setup menu.

I dont think Fruity Loops can be used to trigger...at least the demo version.

Hi guys. First time poster, have lurker for other questions though. you also came up #1 on my google search.

I have an SR-16 that I've used for about 10 years - still cant believe the value. Anyway, I have a band now, playing all covers on the local scene. I want to use the SR-16 as a trigger pad to launch sound bites and play them through our PA. Is this possible? I guess if I can "upload" my sound bites (movie audio or sound efx) to the unit, Im set. If not, I would need to control an external device, like a laptop.

Thanks, Chris
