I cant believe no one here mentioned KEITH MOON, he auditioned for Zeppelin and gave them the name saying " This band will be about as good as a bloody Lead Balloon." In my opinion he was the first drummer that could play completely out of control and not loose time. "The High Numbers" were around in 1963.(6 years before Zeppelin.) Bar hoppers said " The Who" and the bouncers said "exactly get the fuck in there" UnQuote.

There's a vid on youtube of Buddy Rich, it's astounding. here it is:

YouTube - drum solo by buddy rich (1970)

Only Buddy Rich and Bonham can interest me with a drum solo. That's obviously a skill in it's own right, but i also don't think anyone will ever lay down a beat so powerfully as Bonham doing Kashmir at Knebworth on the Led Zep DVD.

Also, some of my favourite drum parts have been played by Bill Ward, check this for brilliance

YouTube - Black Sabbath - War Pigs (Live in Paris 1970)

Finally, Meg White is brilliant. Could anyone in the world be such a perfect compliment to Jack White ? Look up vids of them playing, there's great chemistry between them.
Vinney Appice was also in Black Sabbath for a short time. He is Carmines' little brother. I know this goes back a few pages but I need to mention Carmine Appice again... Carmine played for alot of early rock bands and later played for Ozzy. He is still playing and is still as good as ever.

Thank God someone else likes Carter Beauford. I think he has to be my favorite drummer ever. He's so technically talented, but he really does what's best for the song. Some people don't like him, because nothing really stands out to them, but I think he's amazing. He has the whole bass on 1 and 3 and snare on 2 and 4, but he can do much more. Sometimes, when it suits the song he does more, but he's what I call a musician. I also love Weckl, but, yes, if he was like the drummer for a band we all like, like Led Zeppelin or Heart, it might be a little intimidating, but he can be very musically tasteful. WHO knows?

It would be very difficult to pin down one drummer, but over the years I keep coming back to Dave Grohl when my band comes in with a new song and I think; "What should I be playing that will really prop up this song and give it balls?"

Hell yeah ... Jimi Hendrix said Mitch was his bar of gold. My Vote for best of all time. He played perfectly for Jimi, for what the song required and still had the balls to play over the top when needed.

Why 'Jim Keltner' of course.
While not being overly technical. keltner is a joy to listen to and to watch. He has played as a session drummer on some well known albums for the likes of John Lennon. Bob Dylan, Clapton, McCartney, Harrison. The list goes on.
He was in my opinion at his best when he teamed up with John Hiatt, Ry Cooder and Nick Lowe for 'Little Village'
A band I was fortunate enough to see live in Edinburgh in the early 90s.
