I've got a buddy who knocks the living hell out of his kick drum and I can't recall him ever breaking a head. I'll ask him what he uses.

cool i'll have to check that out, i know eventually the head loses its tone and strength but this was only a couple months old, like 2 months I believe.

talk to your drum guy at the shop you buy from and ask him if it cracks really fast if he would give you a price break on your next one. i use to have a guy here in denver that would work with me on stuff like that when i was trying something new. he liked having input from lots of different players and the break i got didnt cut into his commision

I went from pinstripe to powerstroke 3 to EQ3 to Aquarian Superkick 2. I'll be staying with the superkick 2. It's got a bigger tone than the EQ3 had by far. It is much like an EMAD's sound but the dampening isn't "adjustable".
Remember that your resonant head plays a big role in the sound of the drum. A port looses sustain which translates to bottom end.

My brother got one of the EMAD adjustable dampening heads (or whatever they're called). The large dampening ring made the kick sound like a cardboard box. The small one was okay. However, after playing on it for less than ten hours, the plastic that holds the ring in place started cracking. Before we knew it, he had wasted the extra clams for the dambpening rings. The head hasn't broke yet, though, after over a year of heavy playing (on the weekends). I'd stick with the Aquarian.

After 35 years of experience tuning kick drums for recording, your question about the Evans Emad head is correct. My first choice for that as well... plenty of attack, great low end punch with a satisfying chesty mid to boot. Your choice of front head and tuning is critical though - Hugh Bast
