I made a pretty extravagant bongo once. It was fun to do. I wouldn't even know how to begin building a full kit of acoustic drums though.

That's really neat man. I'd love to see a picture of that kick drum you've just put together. Is there a possibility that you'd might be able to upload a photo or two?

That stuff is probably way out of my league. I've actually always been curious about how difficult it would be to do. Any insight is appreciated thejusticelair.

I've build my own e-kit by taking cheap used toms, cutting them in half, adding mesh heads and piezo's. Works great too! But thats probably not what you're talking about.

I build custom guitars and basses and have never found the acrylic was a good idea from a sound perspective. I have never heard a set of acrylic drums I would use in the studio.

My 2 cents.

theyre better live cause of the huge projection but ive heard them in the studio with success. bonham used acrylics all the time.. soundwise they have a sound of their own , not for everybody but they can sound really sweet

Hey there thejusticelair, I built a kit goin' on 10 years ago and I still love it. The one thing I would do over if I could would be NOT to wrap them and maybe just go natural stain and clear coat. That first time time I set them up and played, sans wrap was just so killer I was all goosey. Then I wrapped 'em and killed a ton of tone. Check them out at babiestookmydingo on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Videos under the video tab. I'm playing/tracking live to the demo vocal/bass/guitar.I build custom furniture and art pieces and had always wanted to build a kit. Next time I'll get it closer to right. Good luck and if I can help just ask. room temp.

I built a kit many years ago when I was still in high school. It took me an insane amount of time because I had to rely on parents for funds (which they weren't always willing to give). All in all it probably took me about 3 years but I was super happy with the outcome.
Although I eventually sold it, I still know the dude I sold it to and occasionally I go play on them for old times sake.
