From a recording perspective, my favourite is a live off the floor album, Tower of Power Direct (Sheffield Labs).

The horn section are ready to knock you right off your seat when they come in.

For me its maybe 2 songs from the 80's Avalon by Roxy Music produced by Bob Clearmountain the seperation and mixing is just great and Tears For Fears Woman in chains they still stand up to today's standards in my book.
generally I'm a pretty big Clearmountain fan.

Horns on Sheffield can be pretty addicting - more so with honky horn drivers. My standard is Mayorga's Camarillo off vol.3

In this particular hour, I nominate Steve Miller and Boz Scaggs doing Steppin' Stone from the great rock year of 1968(I think).

MP3 is available;
Amazon.com: Children of the Future: Steve Miller Band: Music

I'd have to pick Neil Young's Harvest. Something about just getting a bunch of musicians together in a room and saying "you play banjo (James Taylor, in this case), you play keys, you play drums, I'll sing and play guitar, now let's jam out this tune" and recording everything in one take. There's a vibe unlike any other on that album.

Tonight's the Night is the one I pull out most often - love that Crazy Horse sound. The discography I'm now looking at doesn't list the Flamin' Pinks - Ha !!

OMG! I saw that at the record store a while back and just had to buy it. LOL. Not too many people know of that one. But yeah, I love the Crazy Horse stuff too, musically. Recording-wise, though, Harvest is where it's at for me.

Here's a couple seconds of Mayorga. The encoder did alright, but it's compressed in dynamics. The Cartridge is new, but it's only a 50buck AT.
