I have been told, "Write what you know about." Man, I know i'm in trouble. I don't know enough of anything to write about it. I have many years of experiences, but I don't think John Q public is going to give a rip about what i have to say. My theme is to be universal in nature, tell a story, and grab the listeners attention. That's a lot of stuff to remember to do all at once. Anyway, I have gone way too long between songs and it is driving me crazy. You know-you hear that voice in your head that says," Well, I guess you have written your last song." I know that the muse will come someday, but for right now, I'm bummed out over it. I'm a blank. Somebody help!

I read the whole artical. I guess it just reminds me that I am putting too much pressure on myself to come up with something that is commercial. I would like to write something that one day pays off. However, if it never pays off that's o.k. too. I suppose I forgot to relax and enjoy the simple act of writing for pleasure. Thank you for the reminder. Gary

I personally think that writing a song "pays off" the second it is finished (either finished written or finished being recorded).

If you are looking for financial gain, you have some stiff competition. It's possible, but difficult. You'll find that the kind of people who do make a living writing songs are not the kind of people that let "trying too hard" get in the way. This has been my experience anyway.

If you have what it takes to be a pro songwriter, you should be relaxed when you are writing. Professional carpenters don't get nervous when they hang up a door. They just do it. Professional engineers don't get nervous when they mic up a guitar amp. Why would a person be nervous performing an activity they enjoy? (An obvious exception to this is playing live, but that's something altogether different).

If you want to be a pro songwriter, learn to relax and ENJOY the process of writing songs. You probably need to write 1000 songs. Get busy!
