Watermarked Recordings

Hey guys,

Weird questions just not sure what category this would fit into. This may be a dumb question but My friend has a watermarked stream (a full album that is watermarked) and if he streams it and records it into a sound recording program.. Will that remove the watermark on the recorded versions or is that burned on to it also?

If it is an auditorial watermark, then, the simple answer would be "yes." Recording it with a sound recording program shall yeild the same, general auditorial artifacts. If this is a really, really subtle watermark however, the recorder may not pick it up. It just depends on how high of a resolution you "re-record" it with. It also depends on what type of watermark that is used for the streaming audio...is it beeps/pops/low frequency hum? At a high recording resolution, the watermark itself would proabably be transferred over pretty clearly.

Thanks. That i dont know of. As far as i know its a regular audio at high resolution its a watermark stream from a website. You cant hear a watermark or anything its just something that's been placed on the audio I guess. Hes looking to stream it from the hosted website and then record the audio into an audio program via the stream from the computer. I figured I may be able to get the answer for him on this site.

Then... ... ...how do you know it's there? This watermark sounds like it can be done with compression/limiting/EQ...but either way, it would be audible, at least to a spectral-wave analysis. Again, either way, it would be transferred over. It would not just be automatically washed away after the re-recording.

Not a problem at all. I dont have a lot of information about it either. All i know is that is a watermarked album that can be traced if it leaks online. I will try to find out mroe information about it and let you know. Thanks for all the help thus far.
