Well, I tease a bit. Working in a gear shop is very hard to resist : ) I've done my share and didn't make $$$+, but it's a good experience. Generally, retail work sucks. It's not satisfying for me. I'd rather smell like machine oil.

well thinking about it, just for the connections that you can make alone would be a reason to work at a gear shop so i do understand.

Just walking in the place and hanging around for half a day and see how much stuff is actually sold, you have to know that you won't be making much. Figure rent, utilities, local advertising, divide by all the dudes and dudettes working there. Heck, every time I walk into one, I think about this equation and am damn glad I don't work there.

Brandon: that's absolute b**ls**t.

The FACT is that "If they can get away with paying you peanuts, tghey will, because that makes THEM richer".

You ARE right that this is the nature of the capitalist system; These days, that equates to the feudal system - the slaves stay poor, the lords get richer.

Don't, my friend, fool yourself into thinking that the capitalist system is fair. It is immoral, amoral and bankrupt of fairness.

You have some valid points and interesting opinions, but:

This is absolutely true.

I agree: there is value in improving oneself - always.
But doing that does not guarantee, nor even imply a better income/living.

I'm neither red, nor commie, though I might be (ducks to avoid the American backlash)a socialist.

I believe in helping the less advantaged. In a capitalist world that means the big guys getting you to buy more stuff. Des anyone believe Walmart wants you to buy more because it WANTS to pay more tax which will go to helping the less fortrunate? No, they want to do that to get richer and a useful by-product is that they can say they have a social cosncience.

And increasing their margins by reducing copsts (ie payroll etc) means they can do both and sit happily at the top of the pile while their customers rot.

I say NONE of this to be confrontational. I've been at both ends of the spectrum - I'm now disabled and rely on benefits to stay housed and fed. I HAVE NO CHOICE. In my career, I used to earn more than $180,000 a year and I didn't give two monkey's about folks like me now.

And I admit, I was WRONG!

The Guitar Centre (returning to the original post) is almost certainly not the most evil employer in the world. It does appear to be playing the system to it's own huge advantage and to edub357's and his colleagues huge disadvantage.

But until we - the people - change the system, it will forever be this way.

THANKS for the chance to debate this.

Fairness, morality and empathy have been devalued and left behind instead of pseudo-Darwinian values and non-Christian values such as the weak justly deserve what they get, survival of the fittest: the destruction and impoverishment of the rest. It's a curious thing on the American side of the pond that our our society doesn't value society.
